Kelli Ellis

I’m so excited to interview the lovely and talented interior designer Kelli Ellis. I don’t use the word talented lightly. Kelli is a TV personality, camp counselor, celebrity interior designer and now author. Her new book “Do I Look Skinny In This House?: How to Feel Great In Your Home Using Design Psychology” is currently on the book shelves and available for purchase at Amazon.com. I can’t wait to curl up with this paperback and discover new ways on how to turn my home into a heaven. I hope you enjoy the interview and don’t forget to pick up a copy of Do I Look Skinny In This House?…Happy Reading Everyone!

TP: You are so busy and have your hands in several different cookies jars {ie designing, design camp, new book, tv and more}, what advice can you give on juggling it all?

KE: Time management! I have particular days I work on my different projects. Aside from a shooting schedule I do not control, I plan my meetings, client meetings, computer days and shop days accordingly. And of course, the trusty list! Without my daily lists I couldn’t get to all the facets of my life.

TP: I know you probably get this question a lot but I just have to ask, what is Design Psychology and how did you get into it?

KE: Design Psychology is the “why’s of design. Learning to design your home in a meaningful way and understanding “why” you adore certain colors, styles, and decor is more important than knowing where to place furniture in a room. Understanding the principles that create ambiance, feeling, and mood in your home are key to creating your ideal haven. It began with my curiosity as to why my clients would have such strong visceral reactions to certain styles and decor. I wondered what made some people “love” a design and others “dislike” another. I authored the Design Psychology Coaching program offered through the Spencer Institute for life coaches and designers to become Certified Design Psychology Coaches.  It’s nearly impossible to change someone life without changing their surroundings. Most Life Coaches do not train in design, and most designers do not train in psychology, so I bridged the gap. Then the book was born, as I wanted to share the process with everyone.

TP: What was it like to create the Design Psychology Coach Certification program for the Spencer Institute?

KE: The program was an awesome discovery for me. Through a ton of research, exploration of environmental psychology and history of design, I really enjoyed creating this program. I am very proud of this program and my students have done amazing things with the certification and their clients. We come together on as a group, engaging in discussions and support.

TP: I Love, Love, Love the title of your new book. How did that manifest?

KE: Ha! We wear our homes like we wear haute couture, and put them on display for all to see. So voila, Do I look skinny in this house? It is something I would ask my husband if I could try on my own design!

TP: How nervous are you about the book launch?

KE: I am not nervous, just excited! The book is a light look at how we as a culture have transformed simple walls, a window and a door, a shelter, to our havens in which we love to thrive.

TP: What is the one thing you hope readers take away from “Do I look skinny in this house?”

KE: Through the exercises in the book, my readers will look at the items in their home in a whole new way. Readers will learn to look at their homes the way they did when they first moved in, with love in their eyes. Readers will learn a bit about color therapy, light therapy, and the all important 3 F’s – function, flow and feel. Enjoy!!

That Time Of The Year

Well, it seems to be that time of the year again. The time of the year when the sun comes out and we all start running around half naked on the beach or running to hide because we forgot to hit the gym again and now it’s too late. For the first time in a long time I won’t be hiding this summer. I’ve been hitting the Body Works Lifestyle gym since February so I’m ready to kick summers butt and rock the heck out of the Juciy Couture Swimsuit shown below. I was hoping to start the summer butt kicking this weekend but it seems the sun is not ready for me. I can’t believe how overcast it has been the last few days. We have even had a bit of rain. Hope your weekend plans haven’t fizzled out like mine have out here in not so sunny Southern California…Happy Weekend Everyone!
